The Great Gathering: Communities That Made History
Introducing a new series, would love feedback!
In his profound work "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?", Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, "We are bound together in a single garment of destiny." This fundamental truth about human connection stretches back to the very dawn of civilization. Throughout history, we've been drawn together – not just by necessity, but by an innate desire to create something larger than ourselves.
Welcome to "The Great Gathering," a new series taking you on a journey through history's most compelling gatherings, meetings, and assemblies. This isn't just another historical series – it's an exploration of how we've come together across time, space, and cultures to build communities, spark revolutions, share ideas, and shape the course of human history.
Dr. King understood that community wasn't just about physical proximity – it was about the conscious choice to intertwine our destinies. From revolutionary meetings to popular protests and marches to reading clubs, history's most powerful moments have often centered around people making this choice: the choice to gather, to connect, to create change.
But this journey isn't just about the past. As we navigate our own era of digital connection and physical isolation, these historical lessons take on new relevance. How did our ancestors balance individual needs with collective good? What can their gathering spaces teach us about building community today? What wisdom can we glean from history's greatest assemblies to help us shape our future?
This is where you come in. "The Great Gathering" isn't just my story to tell – it's ours. As we embark on this journey together, I want to hear from you:
What aspects of gatherings fascinate you the most?
Which historical communities and movements do you want to learn more about?
What parallels do you see between historical gatherings and your own community experiences?
How can these stories of gatherings help us understand our present and shape our future?
In a world that often seems to be pulling apart, understanding how and why we've gathered throughout history becomes more crucial than ever. As Dr. King reminded us, we must choose between chaos and community. Through these stories, perhaps we can better understand how to choose the latter.
I can’t wait to hear from you and get this series started!
With care,

I think I'd love to hear about how people come together to revitalize public commons. In this moment of time, there's this big push for more third spaces but I feel like we need inspiration for what they could like and how they could run.
